Reykjavik Marathon Cancelled

updated 24. August 2020

In the past few months, the Reykjavik Sport Union has been organising the Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon according to guidelines from the national authorities. Unfortunately, recent changes have made it impossible for us to go forward with this event, which was supposed to happen the 22nd of August, and fulfil the most resent requirements of the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management which went into effect on the 31st of July.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Covid-19 infection rate has gone up rapidly in Iceland, resulting in uncertainty about the future, therefore we have chosen to show responsibility and not put participants in unnecessary risk of harm. Soon, the schools as well as winter sports trainings, are meant to start again after the summer holiday. Therefore, we do not think it is wise to go forward with an event as big as the Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon.

The charity collections on the website Hlaupastyrkur.is is an important part of the Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon, where participants raise money for charities in Iceland. Last year there was a record-amount raised, 167.583.404 ISK for 181 different charities. This annual fundraising is the biggest one most of the charities have. Missing out on this event can have a huge effect on their organisations. We will be working towards finding the best solution we can to help out. Those ideas will be announced in the next few days.

Registered participants have been sent an e-mail with further instructions.
